Election 2009

Please think about the importance of maintaining a voice for South Fidalgo. Without your support and participation, SFCC couldn't exist. South Fidalgo has made our voices heard by listening to residents as we work on a sub-area plan; by addressing traffic breaks and pedestrian/bike rider safety at Sharpe's Corner; and by continuing to build liaisons with state, county, and local constituencies that share our interest in South Fidalgo.

There is much exciting work to be done-alongside your neighbors and on behalf of the neighborhood you care about. Please be part of our efforts to make your council as effective as it can be. Attend the meeting on August 26 (6:30pm, Dewey Beach Fire Hall). And seriously consider joining the council and putting your ideas to work on behalf of the positive change that can happen.

Without you, who will speak for South Fidalgo?

Senator Haugen on Sharpe's Corner Project

Senator Mary Margaret Haugen writes:

Although the 2009-11 transportation budget is anticipated to include funding for several improvements to State Route 20 on Whidbey Island and in southwest Skagit County, the work on Sharpe's Corner is included in a list of 18 WSDOT projects that have been delayed indefinitely.

The decision was made as part of an effort to reprioritize available funding away from projects that would not be operationally complete within four years in favor of projects that could deliver more immediate safety enhancements or congestion relief.

Funding is maintained for other Highway 20 projects, including realignment and widening on Whidbey Island from Libby Road to Sidney Street, widening from Quiet Cove Road to the SR 20 spur, and adding lanes from Fredonia to I-5.

SFCC Acknowledges Rich Bergner

The SFCC congratulates Rich Bergner, one of the council's founding organizers, for his selection as Volunteer of the Year by the National Wildlife Federation in recognition of his quiet but relentless efforts to build the Fidalgo Backyard Wildlife Habitat program on Fidalgo Island.

Road closures continue on SR 20 near Miller Road

Crews cancelled this week’s rock blasting, but there is more to come next week. Expect to see three nights of road closures and detours on Miller Road while crews continue removing rock to widen and lower the highway, just south of the Miller/Gibralter Road intersection.

Wednesday, crews will install drainage crossings across the highway at several locations between Lake Campbell Road and the south end of Miller Road. This work will require crews to close a lane and use flaggers to direct you through the work zone.

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. - Crews will close the highway for blasting and rock removal. A pilot car will escort you through the Miller Road detour. Expect delays, especially between 8 and 10 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 6, from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. – Crews will close a lane between Campbell Lake Road and the south end of Miller Road to install drainage.

East Campbell Lake SWAT Drill April 2

On Thursday, April 2, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Dept. will hold a practice drill at the “dome” house on Almida Vista Court, on the east side of Hwy 20, across from Campbell Lake. The property, owned by the Samish Indian Nation, has been reserved from 7am until 5pm. The Skagit County Sheriff’s Dept. SWAT Team drill is expected to begin around 10am. Residents are being alerted to expect shotgun noises and uniformed officers. The house is scheduled to be demolished at a later date.

Town Hall Meeting with Senator Haugen and WSDOT

Fuel costs, bridge capacity, and traffic safety are increasingly important issues to residents of both Fidalgo and Whidbey islands.

The South Fidalgo Community Council will host a town hall meeting on Wednesday, July 9, at 7 pm at Dewey Beach Fire Hall to discuss traffic issues relating to State Highway 20, Deception Pass Bridge, and questions raised about a future new bridge from Whidbey Island to the mainland.

Washington State Senator Mary Margaret Haugen, D-10th District, and Todd Harrison, assistant regional administrator, Washington State Department of Transportation, will field questions from the community.

Citizens are asked to register questions regarding local transporation issues ahead of the meeting. The council will forward questions to WSDOT and Senator Haugen in preparation for the meeting. Registering questions is not a pre-requisite for attending the meeting nor for speaking at the meeting; however, it will help the presenters to prepare to answer questions as fully as possible and to have present the necessary personnel to respond to inquiries.

Some 30,000 vehicles travel Highway 20 through Sharpe's Corner to Anacortes, I-5, and Whidbey Island. Deception Pass Bridge forms a vital link from Whidbey to the mainland. Passage of Highway 20 through a state park and rural south Fidalgo Island is raising questions about its ability to handle the growing traffic.

Sharpe's Corner Roundabout Design Improved

WSDOT has accepted a proposed enhancement for its Sharpe's Corner redesign.

After an independent review, WSDOT now suggests a roundabout (which garnered the most support of the seven options) with a few modifications is the best solution at Sharpe's Corner.

Community Council Meets with WSDOT

The South Fidalgo Community Council met with the Washington State Department of Transportation on December 4 to discuss options for their Sharpe's Corner intersection project. Chief among the six options they presented are the roundabout and continuous flow designs, as they present the best value for the money and operational lifetime. (Interested community members may want to view this WSDOT video on roundabouts.) While the Council did not vote to endorse any design option, members did ask for additional information on how making simpler adjustments to the intersection, such as the addition of another turn lane, could work. WSDOT provided this e-mail response to similar questions posed by Anacortes City Councilor Cynthia Richardson.

Community Councilmembers expressed concern over the amount of traffic being diverted through South Fidalgo on its way to Whidbey Island and inquired about the feasibility of a bridge between Whidbey and a more direct access to Interstate 5. The WSDOT representatives indicated that while they have studied the issue, they've found no easy answers. As a follow-up, WSDOT provided this bridge/ferry feasibility study (2MB PDF),this summary of the study's survey responses (2MB PDF),and this summary and December 2007 update (125KB PDF).
